In our house we also have a sliding door that leads to the outside from the family room. This is more difficult to secure, especially against toddlers, because of the design of the door. It didn’t take long for my son to figure out how to work the lock on the door, so we had to figure out a way to install a patio door lock on the slider that would keep him inside as well as allow the door to function. For this we decided against purchasing a special patio door lock and instead just wedged a two-by-four into the other side of the slider to keep it from sliding open even if it is unlocked. This is also useful in keeping burglars out because they would have to break the glass, rather than just break the lock after all. When it comes to home safety, everyone thinks first of securing their home against danger from the outside. But when you have children you also have to consider that you need to secure the doors and windows from people exiting the house as well in any event.
