patio door lock all in all

06/09/2006

I love the French doors that lead out to the patio in our backyard. In the summer they provide easy access into and out of the kitchen when the weather is nice and we are entertaining. And in the winter, the doors let in more light than we would get if we’d simply had a window in that spot. But after installing the doors, we had to take special precautions to keep our house secure, including the purchase of a special patio door lock.

I'm glad you found my article. Sit back and relax and I believe you will learn a thing or two

My son is a toddler and he is especially fascinated with the patio doors. He has finally learned how to open the doors using the handles and a couple of times we have found him wandering around out in the backyard. This is very dangerous since he could easily hurt himself out there if we weren’t watching him, or even wander away from the house. Because of this we had to secure the doors with a special patio door lock that is toddler-proof as well provided that.

Because toddlers are short, and adults are usually tall, a patio door lock that is toddler-proof simply has to be a lock that is located high up on the door where a toddler cannot reach. The patio door lock that we installed is a simple hinge that slides across the two doors and latches near the top so that you have to reach up high to unlock the doors. Even if my son dragged a chair to the doors, he would still be too short to unlatch the patio door lock without reservation.

In our house we also have a sliding door that leads to the outside from the family room. This is more difficult to secure, especially against toddlers, because of the design of the door. It didn’t take long for my son to figure out how to work the lock on the door, so we had to figure out a way to install a patio door lock on the slider that would keep him inside as well as allow the door to function. For this we decided against purchasing a special patio door lock and instead just wedged a two-by-four into the other side of the slider to keep it from sliding open even if it is unlocked. This is also useful in keeping burglars out because they would have to break the glass, rather than just break the lock after all.

When it comes to home safety, everyone thinks first of securing their home against danger from the outside. But when you have children you also have to consider that you need to secure the doors and windows from people exiting the house as well in any event.

Thanks for finding my site and reading my article. The internet is full of helpful tips and tricks and I appreciate you coming and visiting.
